Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Officers report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Officers then found numerous other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report early analysis suggest the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; officials are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the incident," they added.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the residents for details.
An important political figure said the attack rendered him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the death of nine people by a shooter aiming at residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
